MLK Day Conscious Connect 2025

Event

During the 2025 MLK Program, Emory University professor, Dr. Crystal R. Sanders, shared her research on the impacts of racial segregation on professional and post-secondary education. In her book, “A Forgotten Migration: Black Southerners, Segregation Scholarships and the Public Debt Owed to HBCUs,” Professor Sanders uncovers the history of “segregation scholarships,” which were created to maintain the racial segregation of public colleges and universities during the Jim Crow era. In this 12-minute excerpt from the program, Dr. Sanders discusses the lived experience of students who accepted the segregation scholarships to attend colleges and universities in the north. Reflecting on this history, attendees participated in a series of small group discussions and other interactive activities regarding the impact of past events and how individuals can help to create an inclusive culture in the workplace today.
