April Mason Shares Plans as Birmingham Office Managing Partner with Birmingham Business Journal
April Mason, the newly appointed Birmingham office managing partner, discussed her new role, plans and goals in the May 20, 2021 issue of the Birmingham Business Journal. In addition to continuing her legal practice with the firm’s Corporate and Tax Practice Group, Mason outlined several items on her to-do list in the new position, including attracting diverse talent and growing the firm’s community involvement.
“The focus is clients, it’s our people, and it’s our community,” Mason said. “Our clients come first. In order to provide the best service to our clients, we really have to have the best people and provide the best for employees and attorneys. That includes attracting and retaining the top legal talent in the city.” She added that culture is an integral part of succeeding in these goals, saying “I want this to be a place where people want to work.”
Another central focus of her leadership will be to build upon the firm’s diversity and inclusion efforts. “I feel a lot of responsibility, frankly, as a female in this role and making sure that we are attracting and retaining diverse individuals,” Mason said. “I think we all realize we make better decisions when there’s diversity of thought … so that is something that’s going to be top of my list as well.”
Other priorities include identifying innovative ways to provide better efficiencies and opportunities for the firm, as well as continuing the firm’s success in helping grow the Birmingham region by continuing to foster economic development, including sectors like health care and technology. “I think we also are community focused, and that’s going to be a big goal of mine as well,” she said. “I’m a huge believer in paying your civic rent, and this community has done a lot for Burr & Forman, and we will be committed to giving back to this community as well. So not only growing it from an economic development side, but also being a good community partner.
