Greg Canfield to be Awarded Prestigious Order of the Rising Sun
Greg Canfield, Managing Director of Economic Development, has been awarded the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by the Government of Japan.
The award, which is one of Japan's most distinguished national decorations, was presented to Canfield by Consul General Mio Maeda at a conferment ceremony held on January 30 at Burr & Forman's Birmingham headquarters. Speakers included Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, Honorary Consul Mark Jackson, and Burr CEO Ed Christian.
Canfield received this honor in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of trade and the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States during his tenure as Secretary of Commerce for the State of Alabama.
"I am humbled and deeply grateful to the Government of Japan for this honor," said Canfield. "I hope to continue promoting relationship-building and economic exchange between our two nations."
Established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan, the Order of the Rising Sun was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese Government. Awarded to individuals who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, this honor is one of the highest orders bestowed by the Japanese government. Past recipients of the Gold Rays with Rosette include baseball player Hank Aaron and actor George Takai.
