Overview
Sara Martinez currently serves as counsel in the firm’s Real Estate practice group, where she utilizes her broad range of experience in environmental law, administrative law, real estate development, and civil litigation to provide comprehensive assistance to her clients. Sara’s practice includes representing governmental entities and private companies such as real estate developers, manufacturers, mining companies, and waste companies.
Prior to joining Burr & Forman, Sara served as Chief Counsel for Environmental Affairs at the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. In that capacity, Sara provided legal counsel to executive leadership and senior management on complex environmental issues across all media including air, water, and soil. In addition to litigating on behalf of the Department, she advised on policy, permitting, remediation, compliance, and enforcement.
Sara was initially a civil defense litigator representing governmental entities. She also spent the majority of her early career focusing her practice on affordable housing as internal counsel for state agencies in South Carolina and Georgia, with a brief stint in private practice representing developers of multifamily affordable housing. During this time, Sara provided legal advice and services related to housing bond finance, residential mortgage production, and multifamily affordable housing development.
Sara earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Furman University and her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina.
