Overview
Tim Heisterhagen currently serves as counsel in the firm’s Transportation, Insurance, and Product Section practice group, where his practice focuses on maritime, aviation, and commercial litigation.
Before joining the firm, Tim served as both the Chief of the Civil Division and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. As the Civil Chief, Tim managed the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Civil Division, which is responsible for representing the United States in various civil matters. As an Assistant United States Attorney, Tim defended the United States in various actions brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act and the Administrative Procedure Act, and in other matters involving regulatory and constitutional claims.
He also worked at a local full-service law firm prior to his time at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. At his previous firm, Tim established a nationwide practice defending dozens of product liability matters involving aviation, maritime, and other products. Tim also handled other complex litigation matters, including maritime, toxic tort, and medical malpractice cases.
Tim earned his Juris Doctor from The University of Alabama School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from Washington and Lee University.
Experience
- Retained by an aviation engine manufacturer to defend catastrophic product liability cases.
- Retained by various maritime companies to Jones Act cases, vessel collisions, dockside explosions, and capsizing cases.
- Tried an eight-week jury trial in Philadelphia, PA involving an aviation accident resulting in the deaths of two individuals with substantial exposure.
- Obtained a defense verdict in a four-day jury trial in Mobile, AL involving a retaliatory discharge claim.
