Bill Lawrence Highlights NIL’s Philanthropic Opportunities for BestColleges.com
William M. Lawrence spoke with Best Colleges on November 28, 2022, for an article titled This Pitt Football Player Is Using NIL to Aid Haiti, which takes a look at how NIL has opened doors for charitable organizations. The article discusses Deslin Alexandre’s (University of Pittsburgh’s defensive lineman) use of his name, image, and likeness in founding The 5th Down Campaign, a nonprofit that provides basic needs such as meals, school supplies, and education for kids in Cap-Haitien, Haiti.
The NCAA’s NIL policy not only allows college athletes to make endorsement deals, cash in on social media, and get paid for doing so, it allows them to support charitable organizations. Bill said, “The NCAA doesn’t dictate what an athlete can do with money he or she receives. If a player wants to use it for philanthropy, that is fine from the NCAA’s standpoint,”
